(yes! i finally found one to fondle. so thin and light).
So i’m just about to board my flight to London in jolly ol’ England (I’ll be there for a week), and i thought i’d throw up a post asking that question that everyone is asking today:
Are you gonna buy the new iPhone?
I’m on the fence right now.
If you buy one (especially first timers), flickr a photo and link it in the comments. It will make me jealous, but i’ll try to be happy for you.
PS. I may get one, I may not. We’ll see tomorrow… if I make it through Platform 9 3/4…

July 10, 2008 at 7:40 PMFor right now, I’m going to pass on iPhone 3G. I think the 2.0 software will hold me over.

July 10, 2008 at 7:53 PMI’ll be in line at the Rogers Store in a couple hours. Will definitely upload some pictures when I get home.

July 10, 2008 at 7:54 PMMy boss just got the iphone just a few minutes ago…..
Nearly everyone in town was in that store trying to get one and only 5 people were about to get one today…

July 10, 2008 at 8:00 PMVodafone in New Zealand came up with a ridiculous price for the iPhone plans and handset itself. Total rip off!! You can get the iPhone here for only $199! But..but you will have to sign up a 2 years contract paying $250 per month!! Jokers!
On the cheapest plan ($80 per month) the price is $549 for the 8GB iPhone. However, it’s a crap plan. Vodafone NZ has the worst price plans and most expensive iPhone so far.
I will wait and import one from Uncle Sam’s land!
Btw, iPhone has sold out at 4am last night!
RBeezy
July 10, 2008 at 8:07 PMnot yet….waiting until Aug. 8th to see if the price drops and if the plans get better when the Instinct comes out on Bell.
I can’t give Uncle Ted 3 years of indentured servitude….can’t do it.

July 10, 2008 at 8:08 PMI’ve decided to skip the iPhone. I really wanted one, but I don’t trust Rogers as far as I could toss Ted. Who knows how they are going to screw you over once they have you locked into a 3 year contract.
Like Steelie I’ll wait to see what the wireless spectrum auction will bring. But given the history and the strangle hold the Canadian companies have on the cell phone market, I’m not very hopeful :(

July 10, 2008 at 8:58 PMI gotta sell them so I figure I might as well buy one. Plus I’m excited for the GPS as I am often lost.
Fred Hill
July 10, 2008 at 9:14 PMI am going to buy a 1st gen when they hit craigslist and eBay. There is no way I am going to join AT&T. I will just unlock it and go with T-Mobile down here in the States. I don’t really care about the 3G since we have city Wi-Fi where I live, the GPS would be nice, but not enough to sway me to the dark side.

July 10, 2008 at 9:50 PMNo. Yes. No. Yes. Maybe. I don’t know. Yes! Probably not… You think I should?
I’ll go with a good solid maybe. I got the 2.0 firmware for me 1.0 device today….it might be enough…just barely enough…
Yes, Definitely maybe.
Daniel Craig Jallits
July 10, 2008 at 10:28 PMI will be at the N. Michigan Avenue store in 6-1/2 hours!

July 10, 2008 at 11:10 PMNope not buying one yet. The whole 3 year contract business just makes me mad.
If I managed to live without an iPod and a simple phone so far I should be able to live without an iPhone for another few years.
Ashley Burton
July 10, 2008 at 11:30 PMPersonally I don’t think it’s quite “there” yet, needs more storage so I’ll wait. On another note, enjoy London and if you’re looking for a nice old fashioned English pub try Cheshire Cheese near St. Pauls and Blackfriars, it’s a lovely place.

July 10, 2008 at 11:52 PMI dunno… Contracts here in germany are too expensive for me. Maybe I would buy it, if it’s not bound to a contract and cheaper than 600 Euros. We will see!
Take care,
Daniel

July 11, 2008 at 1:01 AMI maintain that unless O2 can match my current plan with Orange then I’m well and truly out.
Funny post script though, I’ve been watching the twitterverse this morning and the amount of people talking about queueing outside shops for the new iPhone blew my mind. I think it’s just sad.

July 11, 2008 at 3:16 AMWith the way that Rogers is handling the iPhone in Canada, I will be steering clear of it. I maintain that Rogers, proud to be #2 in the world, works very hard to charge Canadians more than the rest of the world is charged. I choose to not help them along with that. And a temporary price break which is all they have come back with to date is not good enough. I believe they need to fall in line.

July 11, 2008 at 3:18 AMFor now I’m gonna stick with my (unlocked) first gen iphone. The 2.0 firmware is already proven to be unlockable, just waiting for a release of the software now, should be soon.
Maybe when I’ll actually be in one country for more then 2 or 3 months I’ll buy a 3G with a contract, but right now roaming charges would be totally killing me.

July 11, 2008 at 4:42 AMThe answer to that question is an obvious ‘yes’ – my bigger concern is what colour to get!
Tyler Ingram
July 11, 2008 at 5:21 AMI won’t be getting one. Mainly because I have no need to renew my contract for another 3 years and have to dish out over $3000 during that time period to have an iPhone. Besides with the Samsung Instinct and HTC Touch Diamond coming out I’d rather get one of those.
Though if someone were to be gracious enough to send me an unlocked iPhone, I would gladly accept it, review it, link to them etc etc etc.

July 11, 2008 at 9:38 AMhaaaaa the power of 3G……

July 11, 2008 at 11:08 AMhey, i see you guys are not really in friendship with your provider, but i have a question about: is there a prepair thing without a contract in canada so i can bring the phone unlocked to europe?
thanks
chris

July 11, 2008 at 1:14 PMI will someday, but not anytime soon. It may still be a year or so before I get one. :(
Dean
July 11, 2008 at 1:46 PMNot. At least not if I don’t change my mind every day. But the Instinct from Samsung seems a really good buy. Espacially because we can shoot video with, but not with iPhone. And 3G is still too slow.
Dwayne
July 11, 2008 at 1:53 PMI am with Matthew :) go dude
Chris
July 11, 2008 at 8:41 PMNot with that effing contract.
I am, however, updating my iPod touch as I type this. I will soon know whether I will be getting one unlocked and going monthly, or sticking with my iPod Touch/Treo 750 combination.
Mitchell
July 11, 2008 at 10:40 PMI’m with Verizon… so I can’t. But I would if I could!
I’m getting the Voyager. Sweetness!

July 11, 2008 at 11:44 PMI thought that I was gonna buy one, but it seems to barely be a phone…
iThink I’m gonna wait the reactions of the first buyers

July 12, 2008 at 12:16 AMOUI ! bien sûr, j’achète. Le 17 juillet en France…
I await 3G since 12 years…

July 12, 2008 at 6:03 AM@ Lisa: Here’s a photo of my new 3G iPhone for you…
(sorry about the quality, but i don’t have my camera here so i went with Photo Booth)
http://www.pbase.com/jpvaz/image/100043885.jpg
And here is a screen shot of the iPhone (on the 1st gen you had to install a application to do this, now with software v2 you just press the HOME button and the SLEEP/WAKE button at the same time)

July 12, 2008 at 6:53 AM@Dean You may want to hold out on the Instinct. I just read an article yesterday on Engadget talking about people having issues with it.

July 12, 2008 at 8:02 AMHey Lisa, I won’t be getting an iPhone anytime soon. I’m already locked into another phone company. Sigh. But I’ll really consider getting one once my contact expires. Maybe then, they’ll have the 3rd gen iphone. heh
Nick
July 12, 2008 at 8:40 AMHey lisa, i’m still locked with fido for 1 year & half, this was my first contract (3 years) .. and I don’t want to get another one! i’m thinking of getting something likes your walkie-talkie next time :) there unbreakeable!
Chris
July 12, 2008 at 2:19 PMUpdate to my previous post:
I will not be getting one. Reason being, there is no category sync with the Exchange sync. I rely too heavily on categories for organisation to go without them.
Stacey
July 13, 2008 at 9:58 AMI lose phones so I tend to get bare bones cell phones so I don’t get attached to them. The iphone would likely end in tragedy. Le sigh.
Jonrey
July 13, 2008 at 8:30 PMI already did and I’m lovin’ it. I did not go for any data plan as it’s priced ridiculously. I’m holding out until Rogers brings down the cost or at least will not require me to sign-up for 3 years on the data plan. I think I can live without accessing the web while driving around. My blackberry is more than enough to keep my eyes off the road.
Without the data, still an awesome phone. Although I look at it as an iTouch with phone capabilities. Makes me feel a lot better.
As I keep renewing my contract with Rogers every time a new phone comes up, I believe my contract goes all the way to 2030 now, lol.

July 14, 2008 at 3:22 AMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm………. Actually, I wanna buy that cool gadget. I love apple/mac products.
Chris
July 14, 2008 at 2:48 PM@Jonrey So, if you don’t go for a data plan, you can get it without that blasphemous three-year contract?
