My Endless Pursuit of an iPhone in the UK

Just arrived back home to beautiful sunny Vancouver. I rarely blog about the weather, but maaaaaan it was cold, rainy, cloudy and nothing like summer in England. You get sun for 5 mins, just start to relax, then boom! ominous cloud and rain! I’m writing an angry note to the Queen!

So I still not in possession of an iPhone. I seriously can’t believe that I could not find a 16GB in England. They were all sold out everywhere and there were massive wait lists just to get on a list to get an iPhone. You gotta respekt apple for the incredible hype power they have.

I’ll probably wake up tomorrow, walk out of my house, and find they are selling iPhones at the corner store. Oh cruel fate!

PS. I promise a non iPhone related post asap. Just gotta get through the multitude of photos and videos and biscuits i bought.

PPS. I got totally pulled over AND interrogated for 1 hour at customs in Vancouver because they didn’t believe that:

  1. I was a photographer;
  2. I’d stayed so few days in the UK without some ulterior motive like, say, drug running;
  3. I traveled so much in the UK (London – Cambridge – Bury St. Edmunds – Leeds – Derbyshire (Alton Towers!!!) and back;
  4. The MacBook Air was so small;
  5. Someone could spend $50 on biscuits (I reckon they’ve never been in Marks & Spencer);
  6. I had not laced said biscuits with Narcotics.

Note to self: Next time lie about the biscuits.

    I am personally glad you were unable to upgrade your iPhone. You look too good talking into your Canadian version. It will just not be the same once you start talking into a “real” fancy slim version. Oh well, the time will come. It is inevitable.

    Welcome back by the way. It has been long days with no new Mostly Lisa posts.

    Trot on down to the Rogers store by Safeway … I walked in there on Tuesday and picked myself up some 3G action. I changed my tune, I know…. :)

    eBay. They tend to go for over $1000 there, but they can be found for less (sometimes a lot less) if you spend a lot of time looking. The only issue is that if you get one from overseas you may not get the petit ac adapter that the North American version comes with.

    Hi Lisa

    You must have been on Canadian time:) My mate got one in Durham City, said the shop was sold out by lunch time, should have got up earlier:)
    We went to a Wedding in Bury St Edmonds last year, nice place. Shame I didn’t know you were in Leeds, could have bought you a coffee!
    Hope you get the phone you want soon!
    Cheers

    oh poor Lisa!!
    i think that you + iPhone = End of the world. If it were any other situation, the techGods would let you have one but sadly this is Not To Be.
    =[
    && boo customs. how could anyone NOT believe you spending £50 in biscuits? stupidstupidstupidcustoms. but then again did you hear about the kid who was accused of baking LSD into a batch of cookies and hand-delivering them to a police station? so, narcotics laced biscuits is not so far-fetched. But alas…. customs still sucks.

    It’s been something like that trying to get one in Australia. the only thing more annoying than the insane queues to try get an iphone is all the people who already got theirs. Grr… ;)

    Gotta love Canadian Customs. Had no luck for 5 days in Calgary looking for a 16GB, but got to know several Rogers employees well seeing how I ended up there 3 or 4 times a day. Ended up ordering one on Thursday, should be here by Monday (if UPS plays nice).

    @Pasquale I’m in Sydney. If you’re prepared to part with a kidney Telstra has heaps but if not, this is the line for Optus at the Apple Store http://www.flickr.com/photos/rageman/2677718167/ Optus are apparently sold out and they said they wont have more for three weeks or so :(

    Webmonkey has created a clever little iPhone availability service.

    Based on Apple’s own iPhone availability service, you can locate the closest store with iPhones in stock.

    The closest store to me is 5627 miles away…yes it only works in the US.

    The closest store to Vancouver is 619 miles away and it’s a black 16gb.

    Ordered a 3G from Rogers last week, but I probably won’t get it before my next trip to Spain. The good news is that PwnageTool 2.0 dropped over the weekend, so I now have the new firmware running on my iPhone Classic. Teh awesomeness of Remote app for AppleTV cannot be overstated.

    That shouldn’t be too tough. They’re fairly-slow moving. ;)

    I heard that Wirelesswave also carries iPhones. There’s another option for ya, if Rogers locations don’t pan out.

    @Pallian Care to make two fellow canucks happy? ;-)

    Srsly. I saw a few today. The only reason I don’t have one now is because of Rogers’ contract requirement. And I was even willing to pay full price for one!
