5 iPhone Photography Apps to make your Shots Spectacular

May 25 2009

iPhone shot of the day: Sublime Sunset
Sublime Sunset on Kits Beach captured with an iPhone.

So many people whine about the iPhone’s camera quality and say that it can’t take good pictures. It’s my strong belief that you can take great shots with any camera, even a 2 MP iPhone camera. It’s definitely a greater challenge to get a good exposure on an iPhone vs a 5D MkII, but it’s not impossible.

If you are up for the challenge, here are 5 apps that will help you take smashing iPhone pictures:

1. Blurry photos? Use Fast Tap Camera $.99

burned
Fast Tap Camera snapped my awesome new scooter trick. :P

Shaky hands = shaky picture. Unless you are going for some motion blur, or light painting, then you probably want a sharp picture. The problem is the camera button is so fracking small and awkwardly placed, especially if you are taking a photo from any other angle other than straight in front of you. That’s why you need Fast Tap Camera. Press anywhere on the screen and snap! Excellent for narcissistic twitpics of yourself. :P

2. Photos are too dark? Use Photogene $2.99

iPhone photo of the day: Easter Eggz
Easter eggs in a supermarket never looked so good.

The exposure is locked on the iPhone, which means that you can’t change it. There is a way to mess with the exposure by focusing the camera on a dark spot and quickly shifting it into the light, and snapping the shot almost simultaneously. This technique requires serious ninja skills. If you aren’t quite at a black belt level with your iPhone camera like  Chase Jarvis, you may need a little post-production help.

Photogene allows you to adjust levels, exposure, colours, saturation, among other things (cropping, adding text, speech bubbles, etc.. I use this app more than any other. It’s well worth the $2.99.

3. Low light photos look crappy? Use NightCamera $.99

iPhone Shot of the Day: Buena Vista Park, SF
NightCamera gives Buena Vista Park, SF  a little boost.

You shouldn’t really have high expectations for iPhone shots taken in a dark restaurant. They are always going to look noisy and fairly crappy, but using NightCamera makes them slightly less crappy. Yeah! My suggestion is that you try using NightCamera any situation where the light is low, like the forest in the above picture.

Either way, NightCamera has a neat accelerometer assisted camera mode where the shutter fires when the phone is steady, and a timer mode. You can also prop up your iPhone on a table top or against a wall to keep it steady. If you are really gung-ho, Joby makes a gorilla pod for mobile devices called the Go-Go.

4. Photos need a little something extra?  Tiffin’s Photo fx $2.99

me and mum painter's
I used the Center Spot filter to fake the LensBaby effect around my mum and I.

Add an optical filter of pizzaz to your shots by applying one of the 26 filters in Tiffen’s Photo fx. This is one of my favourite apps for making photos pop. Add a colour gradient to make sunsets more punchy, a polarizer to make skies richer, vignette to make faces stand out. You can even layer a bunch of filers on top of each other for a super cool effect.

5. Photos all look the same? Use CameraBag $2.99

boat holga iphone
This boat house looks extra derelict with Camera Bag’s Helga preset.

CameraBag is the easiest photo apps to use, and one of the coolest. Choose your photo and scroll through the 8 presets. I like the Helga (faux Holga) & Lolo (faux Lomo) settings the best. I find that the Fisheye setting never really comes out and the Infrared setting is just plain weird, but experiment with your own shots. You never know what you’ll come up with.

Photos don’t have to be perfect to capture a memorable place, scene, or moment, but they do need to be taken. So shoot with whatever you’ve got and make it spectacular!

Mostly Macworld 2009 Wrap-up

Jan 15 2009

3rd & Howard looking at Moscone Centre, San Francisco

I’m back in the frozen north, wishing I stole Dr. Kiki’s USB powered heated mittens while I was down in SF, because it is shockingly cold in Vancouver right now. I’ve just begun to unpack my huge bag o’loot whilst watching S4 of Lost. SPOILER: I really wasn’t expecting that crazy ending with Marty McFly and the hoverboard battle. What a shocker!

I was a busy beaver during my first Macworld. I practically interviewed half the exhibitors on the Expo floor… which amounted to about 10 in the end (ooh low blow). Let’s just say the turn out wasn’t as great as it was in past years. It seemed that a few exhibitors didn’t even bother showing up, or pulled out after the first day.

I spent many hours trying to find booths that had magically disappeared. Maybe they just got engulfed in a sea of iPhone cases. I mean 3G iPhone cases. Those people with 1st Gen iPhones weren’t feeling the same love from case developers. On a positive note, the people I did get to talk with seemed optimistic and enthusiastic about the new products they were launching this year, despite the economic “issues” we are all groaning about.

Lisa and Justine Macbreak
Lisa & Justine do a little MacBreaking.

Here is one of the many interviews I did for MacBreak with Speck Products about their new iPhone CandyShell cases.

As I say in the video, a huge pet peeve of mine is people that don’t protect their gear and then drop it. Even if a spectacularly shattered iPhone screen makes a cool photo for your flickr feed, it’s just so wasteful. Maybe it’s just because I waited over a year to get my iPhone, or maybe it’s because I signed a ridiculous 3-year rate agreement, or maybe it’s just because I love my gear, but the first thing I did when I bought a new iPhone was buy it protective armour. I’ll take the extra bulk for safety. I know you iPhone purists won’t budge, but if you don’t have a disposable income, protect your iPhone, cuz it’s a slippery sucker. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Right after the keynote, I buzzed right over to the live MacBreak Weekly 122: Macworld Expo Podcast. I said during this interview that my first Macworld was bitter sweet. In retrospect, I feel like the keynote itself was the bitter sweet part. With Steve officially taking medical leave from Apple until June, all apple lovers, especially the fan boys & girls are feeling pretty bummed right now. Of course it was lame not seeing a Jobs’ keynote with John Mayer’s sweet sweet guitar licks and interfaith cakes (huh?). But, it was still exciting being there after watching it for so many years. The rest of the conference it self was bit lackluster, but I made amazing contacts and it was well worth me making the trip.

On Day 4, I headed to the Pixel Corps studios to record TWiP (This Week in Photography) Episode 64 with the entire TWiP team in studio. It was a hoot, especially when I brought up a fine Aussie tourist gift: The Kangaroo Scrotum Purse. Ahh, the things I say with 3 hours of sleep and a copious amount of cold medication. Nevertheless, it made for a pretty fun episode. I’m almost certain that Alex threw in a JarJar impression at one point, which is rare because he never ever does that. :P

Mostly Lisa on Twit

I rounded off my SF experience with a trip to the TWiT cottage to visit Leo. I ate an In-and-Out burger on air, wore a gorilla pod on my head, made Ewoks noises, sounded incredibly knowledgeable talking about Plasma screens with Ryan Block, confused John C. Dvorak with my J.J. Abrams flashback trivia & was called a “Canadian hottie” by LeVar Burton. Borg. You can check out all this and more here: TWiT 177: There’s A Little Shatner In All Of Us.

Do we really need another NEW iPod?

Sep 9 2008

So word on the internets is that Steve is planing on releasing a new iPod today. Seriously? When is he gonna slow down a tick? Can’t we just chill with the iStuff we have? I have a 80Gb Classic and it’s ace. Before that I was chilling with a mini for almost 2 years.

And honestly, I haven’t even got used to having an iPhone. I feel powerful knowing I can whip out my iPhone and completely disengage from any conversation, no matter how important it is. I gotta have more cowbell! Tink tink tink. :-D

Apple hype and over consumption is like a thorn in my side these days. I recently watched “Manufactured Landscapes”, a startling documentary following Canadian photographer, Edward Burtynsky, as he documents both the destruction and creation of humanity. The sheer magnitude of e-waste ie., computers, tvs, cables, phones, dvd players, iPods is literally astonishing.

50% of our recycled computer waste ends up in China where workers heat up the circuit boards and hand strip the components of all the precious metals which are mostly toxic. As you might imagine, this isn’t so good for the people living in these e-waste dumps or the earth “in general”.

The point is: I love new gadgets with a firey passion, but I think the world could live without another new iPod. WALL•E FTW!

Since I wrote this post and my blog was down for a while, thanks WPCandy :/, Apple did in fact release some new shiny iPods.

new ipoddds

I have to admit, that ditching the small & stumpy nanos for a rainbow of slim & sexy design is way cool. As for the new Touch… having the iPhone makes it obsolete, so.. yeah. What do you think? Are you gonna buy a new iPod? & most importantly:

Do we really need another new iPod?

Women of New Media on TWiT & Net@Night

Women of New Media on Twit live Photo by Tony Wang | Molly, Lisa, Justine, Sarah, Amber & Leo.

I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing and talented ladies at last week’s New Media Expo. It was weird how we just all happened to wander on TWiT Live at the same time. I think we were lured there by the heaps of tasty brain toniq, TWiT tees & Leo’s mega-watt smile.

Amber MacArthur, Sarah Austin, Molly Lynn & I had a great discussion on women in media, edited vs. unedited content & live streaming, trolls, and something I call the “blogging bikini factor”. Shameless? Yes. Quadruples your daily uniques? Definitely. But I wouldn’t know anything about that. At. All.

My Favourite Schwag from the New Media Expo

Aug 18 2008

One hour before NME in Las Vegas was brought to a close I thought to myself, “What is the best way to wrap up this extravaganza of media madness?” After approximately 5 minutes of deep thinking, I came up with dive bombing random people with DIY wooden airplane.”

Thanks YouSendIt for this wonderfully fun bit of schwag, I hope you don’t mind dealing with a few teeny tiny injury and dismemberment lawsuits. I’m sure they are just after a money grab. The propeller barely grazed… ahem *severed* the tendon. What?

Thanks to Doug for filming me and perhaps aiding in the building somewhat of an aviation expert.

I’m gonna take you riiight into the DANGER ZONE!!!

What’s your fav schwag?

I defy you to beat the awesome factor of this schwag. If you can provide an adequate photo or description, I may be impressed.

New Media Exponanza!

Mostly Charlie's Angels (Veronica Belmont & Lisa Bettany)
Lisa & VB.

Just an average day for me. Pimped out my very own Mostly Lisa Tees with the awesome crew at Viddler. Met Veronica Belmont, Amber Macarthur, Leo Laporte (ZOMG), Sarah Austin and hung out on Twit live… Then filmed a few episodes of MacBreak with Alex Lindsay… Streamed live for the first time thanks to the good people at Qik… I still don’t know if it’s for me, but hey, I’m in Vegas. Gotta just break out of my shell a leedle bit…

Now, I’m off for steak … yum … with the Cache Fly troupe and then straight to a Revision 3 party… I know. It’s basically how I spend most of my Fridays… minus the tub o’ ice cream and all the celebrities and the actually talking with people in real life.

Ok. I have approx. 10 mins to get ready to hit the town. It is ridiculously hot. My mum emailed me saying, “I could only find 1 place in the world that was hotter than Vegas (42 C) today and that was Bhagdad at 49 C.” Yikes.

Catch me on Qik later, I’ll be live streaming. I’ll let you know when on my twitter feed.

Mostly Lisa & the New Media Expo in Las Vegas

Aug 13 2008

Tomorrow, I will be heading off to Las Vegas with Team Viddler for the New Media Expo. I’m really excited about hanging out with Viddler, the cool people that created my favourite video platform, and meeting loads of uber media people.

I need to catch some serious zzzs tonight as I will need my stamina during the shenanigans iJustine, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Sarah of Pop17 will inevitably get up to.

Follow me on twitter, viddler, flickr and the official NME site.

Is anyone else going to the New Media Expo? Hope to see you there!

PS If you know some awesome/cool/fun amazing things I should do whilst in Vegas, gimme a shout below.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 is available today!

Jul 29 2008

Mostly Lisa's first look at Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2

If you listen to TWIP, you’ll know about Fredrick VanScott Bourne’s on-going Adobe’s Lightroom vs Apple’s Aperture debate. Scott swears by Aperture and at Lightroom & Fred’s sweet on LR2.

It’s quite childish really, considering Scott just abandoned Canon for the Nikon D3. hmph! Plus, who starts arguments over technogeeky topics? No one that I know personally, as in not being that person directly. Huh? Exactly. I’ve discombobulated you have I?

When I was down in SF visiting the TWIP team, I was put in the hot seat and forced to pick a side. But, the truth was, I had never used either Aperture or Lightroom. And so a challenge began between Scott & Fred to see which of these two powerful photo editing and management tools would win my little n00b heart.

I’m installing LR2 this very moment and am really pumped about the new features Adobe is offering in this latest update. For more info, check out Fred’s LR2 post. I’m also excited about starting to shoot more in RAW. I think it is the only way of getting the quality, sharpness, and perfect lighting I want in my photos.

My only concern with Lightroom is how it will work with iPhoto as we all know iPhoto and Adobe aren’t the greatest of pals and the interface doesn’t look as clean and apple-icious as Aperture. But, beyond that, I have no leanings towards either, so I am coming into this challenge completely unbiased. Though Fred is pulling out all the stops with his traffic-stopping smile!

Fred is such a tease

If you want to check out Adobe Lightroom 2, you can download a 30 day trial here.

Have your say on the Aperture vs Lightroom debate. What do you use? And why?

Apple Hype: Good or Beyond Bad?

Jul 24 2008

Apple Hype Monster

You must know by now, that I am a wee bit of an Apple fan girl. Obviously. It’s tough to question my loyalty to Apple. Well except the fact that I still have that late 90s Compac desktop sitting in my living room. I just can’t get rid of him, he’s like my personal WALL•E.

Nevertheless, my loyalty for Apple is unquestioned. I may not be die hard enough to say, camp out for days in front of an Apple store to pick up the first released iProduct, but I’ll properly follow the guys that are and feel a quiet self-reflective disappointment that I’m too lazy or apathetic to camp out for days in front of an Apple store. I try to make up for this by posting zany Mac-related videos.

With that being said, I’m going to say something controversial… mostly so be forewarned:

I wish Apple would fix the problems with their current iProducts BEFORE hyping, advertising, then releasing the next gen iProducts.

Especially with computers. Sure Steve, go nuts with the iPods, but your loyal, creative, freelancers and students really need consistent, bug-free machines to work all the time in order to pay rent and hand in artsy school stuff.

I don’t know about how your Macs are running, but mine are far from smooth sailing. Don’t get me started about Leopard. The worst appears to be over, but OSX continues to reek havoc on audio firewire interfaces. It’s not that Mac aren’t lovely and oh so aesthetically perfect I make cooing noises when I stroke the brushed metal, but experiencing regular kernel panics, the spinning pinwheel of death, force quitting, overheating, fan noise, and major battery fail are not memories that are adding to my love of Mr. J’s Empire of hype.

Speaking of hype, ahem, the 3G iPhone, which was just released last week, receiving such massive hype that no one actually ended up getting one. Huh? I don’t get it. Me neither. What is the world coming to when iJustine can’t get a freaking iPhone?!? And already the Apple rumour mills are churning with the pulpy goodness of new sleek and sexy MacBook Touch.

Now as someone who recently got a MacBook Air, is still paying off a Mac Pro, and is still emotionally attached to last year’s MacBook, when I hear about a next generation release or major upgrade to a better, faster, more awesome and streamlined machine than the one I just bought last week, I don’t feel anything related to happy. In fact I feel a little ill, then hysterical, then I get on the line with Apple, and then I wait, and wait, and crrrrrrrrry when my call gets disconnected.

Too much Apple. Too often. Too much exposure and hype and advertising and mainstream blah! Remember when Macs were so underground that you had to fight tooth and nail to get even an once of respect? Like that time you were thrown out of computer camp for refusing to use a PC. Oh you weren’t thrown out of computer camp? That was just me? Ok fine, but It was important for me, at the age of 12, to really lay down the law. Oh and remember when you were the only one with sweet graphics in your 4th grade essay on tornados cuz you had Paint? Yeah, those were the days. Now, anyone from Beyonce to (puke) Spencer from the Hills (don’t ask me how I know that) can use and abuse a MacBook Pro. But, it’s all good right? More money for Apple, more live John Mayer keynote performances, better products for us… Yes? Or more like a n-n-n-No!

What do you think? Has Apple’s mainstream hype and lack of product accessibility (ahem… iPhone) got you feelin’ less than perky? Or are you jacked into your feed reader jumping with glee when your Apple RSS gets all kinds of new, sweet iProducts & Software?

What do you think of Apple hype?

My Endless Pursuit of an iPhone in the UK

Jul 18 2008

Just arrived back home to beautiful sunny Vancouver. I rarely blog about the weather, but maaaaaan it was cold, rainy, cloudy and nothing like summer in England. You get sun for 5 mins, just start to relax, then boom! ominous cloud and rain! I’m writing an angry note to the Queen!

So I still not in possession of an iPhone. I seriously can’t believe that I could not find a 16GB in England. They were all sold out everywhere and there were massive wait lists just to get on a list to get an iPhone. You gotta respekt apple for the incredible hype power they have.

I’ll probably wake up tomorrow, walk out of my house, and find they are selling iPhones at the corner store. Oh cruel fate!

PS. I promise a non iPhone related post asap. Just gotta get through the multitude of photos and videos and biscuits i bought.

PPS. I got totally pulled over AND interrogated for 1 hour at customs in Vancouver because they didn’t believe that:

  1. I was a photographer;
  2. I’d stayed so few days in the UK without some ulterior motive like, say, drug running;
  3. I traveled so much in the UK (London – Cambridge – Bury St. Edmunds – Leeds – Derbyshire (Alton Towers!!!) and back;
  4. The MacBook Air was so small;
  5. Someone could spend $50 on biscuits (I reckon they’ve never been in Marks & Spencer);
  6. I had not laced said biscuits with Narcotics.

Note to self: Next time lie about the biscuits.
