Rockin’ the 2010 GRAMMYs

Feb 4 2010

At the GRAMMYs
(David Karp (Tumblr), Rachel, Pete Cashmore (Mashable) & Lisa Bettany, Darya & Kevin Rose (Digg), Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park) & Anna)

Sunday was a pretty normal day. I woke up at the Beverly Hilton, ordered 3 small pancakes for $20, stole a muffin from Jessica Alba at a Press Junket, got my hair and makeup done, put on a dress (!), jumped in a pimpin’ limo with Kevin Rose, David Karp, my boyfriend Pete Cashmore. I drank champagne, got yelled at for taking photos of the Red Carpet & nearly got harpooned by Lady Gaga’s diamonte headpiece.

Then, I waved at Weird Al, heard the Pants-on-the-Ground guy sing “Pants on the Ground” not once, but five times sequentially down the Red Carpet, watched the GRAMMYs live IRL, ate a super greasy pastrami sandwich in my satin gown, hugged Imogen Heap, celebrated in a private cabana at Diddy’s party, learned about the intricacies of tea from KRose & toasted with @Ev over Jay-Z’s Ace of Spade Champagne. *yawns*

Here are some snaps from the big night.

It was definitely surreal going from my socially reclusive, wifi-addicted lifestyle to hob nobbing with celebs at the Beverly Hilton. Now I’m just back to eating packaged hob nobs and watching ordinary people from my apartment window. Ohh someone just crossed the road and got into a taxi, now a bus is pulling up… where are my binoculars?

Mostly Lost

Jan 21 2009

The Province.

The new season of Lost is premiering tonight at 8/7c or whenever it hits the torrents. I’m literally on pins and needles as to how the Oceanic Six will get back to the island, considering it moved and stuff, and what exactly happened to those left behind. Only JJ knows for sure.

Are you going to watch Lost tonight?

PS. Who’s your favourite Lost character?

Mostly Lisa’s Australian Animal Adventure

Dec 4 2008

As you might have already guessed from the post title, I’m in Australia!

I’m here on the Gold Coast to take some great photos and take a wee bit of a hot and sunny vacation before MacWorld in January. I can’t wait to actually have a skin tone that contrasts with the pasty nocturnal geekazoids at the conference. I will laugh and say, “Haha! That used to be me! But now look at me… I’m all red and… patchy.” Oh yes, I will ride that cool train all the way to the station.

I hope you enjoy all the beautiful Aussie animals I met at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Gold Coast. I couldn’t believe how accessible the animals were, especially the kangaroos. It’s such an incredible experience to just sit in the grass with a pack of kangaroos and wallabies, petting them, taking pictures, and watching them lounge about. I’m hoping to go back again to spend some more time with these magnificent creatures and learn more about the sanctuary.

Can you name any of the crazy Aussie creatures in the video?

Mostly Disney on Ice

Nov 27 2008

I celebrate the Vancouver launch of the newest Disney on Ice show by returning to the ice after 2 years of sedentary geeky activities and a week on the Wii Fit reaching “Yoga Master” in the weird tree pose.

If you want to catch all the glitzy, figure skating action, Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour runs from Nov. 27-30th at Pacific Colosseum.

5 Photography Projects for Rainy Days

Nov 2 2008

Posted on TWiP.

Fall is slowly fading away. The days are short, wet & cold, and the sky is one shade of monotonous grey. I don’t know about you, but I feel like completely hibernating.

Here are 5 photography projects to keep you inspired during the cold, soggy, rainy days:

1. Put your rubber boots on and grab some dewy macros.

abstract of a large leaf with raindrops
50mm. f/1.4, 1/320, ISO 200.

Now is the perfect time to get raindrop covered plant life shots for your portfolio. The light is nice and soft on cloudy days, so you’ll get even light on your subject. Don’t be afraid of getting up close and trying multiple angles. Keep shooting until you find the best angle that makes those raindrops sparkle.

You’ll want to shoot with your Aperture wide open, so you can keep your ISO low and get loads of delicious bokeh. Bring your tripod along just in case you need some steadying. And wear some rubber boots, because you’ll probably be crouching in a huge puddle o’ mud the entire time!

2. Wait for that perfect moody winter sunset.

W. 4th Ave, Kitsilano, Vancouver
18mm, f/5.6, 1/15, ISO 400.

Even on cloudy days the sun can make a brief apperance. And when it does, it’s usually spectacular. If you see the sun start to peak through the clouds during magic hour (1 hour before sunset), bundle up and head out to great landscape location. Winter skies are rich with colour. Add some thick clouds and you’ve got a great shot. There is nothing more magical than sun rays beaming through a dark and moody sky.

3. Get creative with strobes.

Get that flash off your camera and grab some gels and get creative. Set up a little studio in a corner of your place and shoot some stills with character. Check out Strobist for the 411 on off-camera flashes and cheap DIY projects to keep you inspired and busy on a gloomy day.

4. Set-up some stills on your window sills.

Breakfast Croissants at the Angel, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, UK
50mm, f/1.8, 1/80, ISO 400.

If you don’t have flashes or triggers, no fear! Make use of the lovely diffused light coming through your living room windows and snap a still shot of your tea time snacks, little toys, your little sister, sea monkeys, or whatever strikes your fancy. You probably want to set up a bounce or white board opposite the window to get some light on the subject.

5. Find hidden gems in your old photos.

50mm, f/2, 1/125, ISO 200.

Get a big cuppa tea and look though your old photos. As you go, mark or star the photos you think have promise. After you’ve gone through once, go back and pull your top ranked photos into a photo editor (LR, PS, Aperture) and really work on them. A little cropping, sharpening, saturating, some layers and masks and voila! Great shot. You never know what amazing shots are hiding in your archives.

If all else fails, just hunker down in your bed with a stack of DVDs and call it a day.

Existential Crisis at Blog World… mostly

Oct 3 2008

And now for something completely different…

Blog World hi-jinks with my bff Amanda Coolong (TechZulu), Pete Cashmore (Mashable), Snaps (the Kangaroo), USB HubMan/kid, a Zannel squooshie schwag yoyo & a lone pigeon.

Powered by my sweet Mostly Lisa Viddler Tees, 2 hours of sleep, 3 chocolate chip cookies, a large scoop of vanilla ice cream, Yahoo mints, some nuclear green coloured caffeinated drink and Las Vegas.

I’ll be the first to admit it. This video is pretty weird, but it oddly enough captures the essence of a Blogging/Tech/2.0 conference very well. That essence smelling something like a mixture of day-old deodorant, guacamole, gasoline, melting plastic, glue, warm cookies, and dusty carpet. *sigh* I guess you just had to be there.

At least this time I didn’t dive bomb a geek with a USendit airplane or lose a whole bunch of dough with Rosie O’Donnell.

Thanks to rocknrollgeek for filming, the MindTouch girl that gave Snaps a special button, and Pete $more for just lookin’ fly.

PS. I think Amanda really needs to work on her interviewing skills if she’s ever going to be considered, like a serious reporter or whatever.

ijustine and mostly lisa kickin’ it in an apple store

Jun 14 2008

You have to admit, those are some hardcore moves to bust out in the SF Apple store. They were so hardcore we nearly got kicked out. Totally busted.

our little flip family

Also, Justine’s Flip Ultras gave birth to a little baby mino on MacBreak. There were celebrations through the Pixel Corps office….. until a stray dingo was let loose…

PPS. this was only a short excerpt of a day that started at 8am and ended at 2am with the only kind of craziness that you can capture on 5 iPhones, 4 flip videos, a Canon G9, and photobooth… ooh and my Lomo!

don’t hate me but… i has MB Air.

May 14 2008

Whilst in England in February this year, I got very attached with a MacBook Air. It wasn’t mine but I wished and wished with all of my might for it to be so…

AND SOMEONE ACTUALLY SENT ME ONE!! A MB AIR!!! (CAPS LOCKS ATTACK!) How insane is that? I’m still waiting for a Darlick or a Darma dude or a cylon or Ashton or Jonah Takalua to appear…

PS. If anyone else would like to send me stuff, i still need an iPhone, more M&S Biscuits, and a dinosaur Pez dispenser to match my awesome dino PJs. Rarrrr.

Mostly Lisa on Being Totally G4 Famous

Apr 6 2008

A few weeks ago, I was a nobody. I know it’s hard to believe, but I was basically rabbit kibble. Do rabbits eat kibble? Chomp?

But then G4’s Attack of the Show ranked me as the 5th hottest woman of the web and my life went from bunny kibble to like, a really expensive cheese… that’s been aging for years and packaged in fancy paper and served on a silver plate from a store that sells uber fancy plates. Don’t forget the Crystal.
