Back to School doesn’t have to be the end of fun! Well, in all honesty it does, but at least you can soften the blow of returning to the grind by treating yourself to some great geeky gadgets.

After a few months of enjoying blissful afternoon sleep-ins, that first week of 7am wake ups are going to smart. To make sure you aren’t late for your first semester of classes like I was in 3rd year University, you might want to invest in a serious alarm clock.

This alarm clock allows you to set 7 independent daily alarms for each day, so you don’t have the nightly annoyance of setting your alarm. You can also customize your snooze time from one to 30 minutes and set a midday nap alarm with the push of a button.

I'm Hosting the MacHeist Bundle Reveal Show

I just arrived in San Fran after an awesome, snow filled, American snack attack, couple of days in Portland.

I’m in lovely SF for the most anticipated live show of the year! The MacHeist 3 Bundle Reveal show is this Tuesday night at 8pm EDT (5pm for west coasters). We’ll be broadcasting the show from San Francisco at Pixel Corps studios.

Hosting the show will be: Veronica Belmont, cat lover & host of Tekzilla on Revision3 and Qore on PSN. Chris Pirillo, media-friendly geek and Tech Expert for CNN.com. & Me, host of living room puppet shows, Zombie Impersonations: The Podcast & creator of SockGobblins.net

Not impressed with Chris
Chris, Veronica & I at Pixel Corps for rehearsal.

Be sure to tune in! I may even ask my evil Russian spy twin to pop by. But, you know Sophia… Always in the middle of conjuring up some sort of devious plan.

I’m producing the show so I’ll be in panic mode until the whole thing has finished and is successful. Keep your fingers crossed…

Talking Comics

Mar 9 2009

I saw the premiere of Watchmen at midnight on the IMAX screen and holy smokes was it ever awesome. My experience of watching the film was similar to the first time that I saw The Matrix. The action was spectacular, the characters were layered, and it actually made you think. Only with Watchmen I didn’t have to spend a week getting Keanu’s annoying voice out of my head. This time it was something else that distracted me… what was it again… oh yes the #bigbluedong. Looks like even Dr. Manhattan has something to prove. Ah, but who can blame him with lil Miss Lady Latex getting all snuggly with Mr. Horny Beak up in the fiery sex pod.

Go see Watchmen and then read the graphic novel. I’m half way through and it is equally, if not more entertaining than the movie.

My Top 5 Favourite Directors

Sep 2 2008

I’m passionate about film. There are few things I love more than watching a great film. Even if a movie has a crap storyline or the acting is atrocious or the music is mainly comprised of midi horns, I’ll still learn something from it. Maybe it’s what not to do or maybe it’s just stunning visually.

I get a lot of my photo lighting and composition ideas from film. I’m actually just watching “The Assassination of Jesse James” and I have an uncontrollable hankering for tall wheat grass and dark and moody skies. … I’d take Roger Deakins over Mr Pitt any day. Well, maybe every other day :p

I also love learning all about the people who make films and their process. And yes, I watch all the special features. Yup, even the lame ones with just written credits or extended scenes. I do, however, hate watching deleted scenes. The scene was cut for a reason. Just leave it be. If you disagree, let’s argue! Ha! Cuz for me, you can’t beat hot n’ heavy, super geeky discussion about film.

When I was in Vegas for the NME, I ended up at a very swanky party with some of New Media’s top dogs talking/arguing about great directors. It was super fabulous. It went something like this.

What are your top 3 favourite directors?

The 19 year-old shaggy blond intern & film school n00b said, “Michael Bay. Dude. Transformers was seriously awesome!”

The 30 year old film school veteran & top dog retorted, “Michael Bay??? Scorsese. Hands down.”

The intern then shot back, “but dude… that car chase scene in Bad Boys 2 is like the best EVER!”

There was much back and forth discourse, until the fast-talking, smooth, good-looking agent, also a film school grad, gave a detailed and analytical description of his favourite directors, David Fincher, Tony Scott, Ridley Scott & James Cameron. I totally gave him a high five and we talked about how wikkid awesome James Cameron’s 3-D movie “Avatar” will be.

Then I threw in an awkward “they mostly come out at night, mostly” and waited for someone to get the film reference, but no one did, and it hung in the air like a hovering fly or perhaps something larger and more uncomfortable like a pelican.

Thankfully, the quiet intern with the dark framed designer specs broke the silence with, “I know that everyone is gonna say this lately because of Batman, but… Christopher Nolan.” I totally gave him an air high-five, because I wasn’t close enough to high five and I felt like we hadn’t reached that level of comfort yet. Eye-contact had been made, but no “safe zone” had been established.

And then the power mane loving intern pointed at me and said, “Now you! Go!”

  1. Tony Scott

Period. Some people say Tony is hit or miss. I say, he’s a visonary. He takes risks and takes jump cuts to the next level of awesome. Top Gun!? Classic. It was my absolute favourite movie when I was a kid. I even plastered my room walls with F-14 Tomcats. No Goose!!!!! Also, Spy Game (2001) is one of my top 10 movies. You know that one sequence with Brad and Robert Redford on the roof and the helicopter circling around? Yeah! That’s the stuff. The Last Boy Scout (1991), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Man on Fire (2004)? Awesome. I love his visual style and how he always highlights sweet tech stuff and loads of gadgets. I know a lot of people didn’t like Deja Vu (2006), but seriously, it was a high tech visual orgasm of awesomeness.

  2. Christopher Nolan

knocks my socks off. His movies are so darn good. Every scene is meticulous and melts into each other. No one else could have captured Memento like Nolan. His awareness of time, structure, and lighting is insane. The Dark Knight (which I haven’t seen yet… forgive me) The Prestige (2006), Batman Begins (2005), Insomnia (2002), Memento (2000) & Following (1998).

  3. Gosh only one more… But there’s Terry Gilliam, Paul Greengrass, Alfonso Cuarón, Sam Mendes, Francis Ford Coppola, Scorsese, Sofia Coppola, Mike Nichols, Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, Michael Mann, Steven Soderbergh, Wes Anderson, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Pedro Almodovar, David Fincher, Christopher Guest, Gorge Clooney (who is so ridiculously talented)… Ack…

    Ok. I need 3 more. I know it’s cheating, but…

  4. Ridley Scott

is Epic. Everything he does is big, bold, and beautiful. Give this man an Oscar, seriously. That fact that he didn’t win best director for Gladiator (2000) was so totally lame. Uh! I don’t think I even have to tell you why I love Ridley. I’ll let the plethora of awesome Ridley Scott films speak for themselves. My personal favs are American Gangster (2007), Black Hawk Down (2001), Blade Runner (1982), Alien (1979) (my favourite of the Alien Quadrilogy) . I can’t watch Hannibal (2001) as it scares my pants off. Also, if you haven’t seen Ridley’s first movie, The Duellists (1977), go rent it and watch the last scene. One shot. It’s intense.

  5. Paul Greengrass
is gritty and real. His four films have all been incredible. Two of them even make it into my top 10: The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) & The Bourne Supremacy (2004). And that’s something. United 93 (2006) & Bloody Sunday (2002) are also stunning. I can’t wait to see what he does next.
  6. Steven Spielberg:

is like a perfect hug. Smothers you in visual perfection and endings that make you just love the world. How could you not say Spielberg.

Learn How to Use Ur Camera

Aug 27 2008

Canon XSi/450D (front)

A lot of people ask me how I take such fantastic pictures. I usually tell them I’m just really talented and obviously have an innate gift for “The Arts”. But because I don’t want to come off as vain, I put this emoticon “:p” at the end. :p

To be honest, I still consider myself quite new to photography and always feel humbled whenever I log into flickr and see the incredible photos people are taking. It seems that order to be a good photographer, you have to constantly learn things, some of them difficult, and be, like, creative all the time. Harsh, I know.

So here I am to help push you to be a better photographer with a super helpful photo tip every week until your photos are awesome, or I get bored of teaching you :p

Here Photo Tip #1: Learn How to Use Your Camera!

1. Read your camera manual!

read your camera manual

I know it’s boring. I didn’t want to read it either, but knowing how to move around your camera insides and outsides is really important. Nothing is more frustrating than fumbling around on your camera in the field. Where is that darn exposure button? How do I delete all pictures? Crud. How do I display the histogram? What are all these numbers and letters on the screen. Ack!

So get a good cuppa tea or coffee (if you prefer that vile stuff) and sit down with your camera and its manual. Go through all the menus and buttons with your camera. Don’t just read it passively, but actively go through every menu setting and button, camera in hand, taking test shots as you go.

I also recommend carrying it in your camera bag if you are a beginner. If you get stuck on something, look it up. Warning: This process may actually lead to learning how to use your camera as more than just an expensive and weighty electronic necklace.

This brings me to my next point…

2. Never use auto settings. Ever.

Auto Robot

I know this is a drastic statement, but trust me on this one, your photos will always look kinda crappy if you use auto settings. That includes the “face” one, the “running man” one, the “mountain” one, the “flower” one, even the “nighttime” or “fireworks” one! Any setting represented by a little cute picture is off limits!

I know that this is a difficult habit to break if you are new to photography. Like most people, I started taking photos on auto settings. After a while, I realized that I had no creative control and I noticed that basic things like focus, exposure, and white balance were all out of wack. Basically, my photos looked subpar and amateur. So I committed a lot of time and effort, and actually learnt stuff about aperture, shutter speed, etc. I know. Crazy.

So repeat after me, “I promise to not use my camera’s default auto setting as a crutch and take control of my photos!”

3. Always set your White Balance

super bad WB! correct WB-1

Nothing looks crappier than photos with incorrect white balance (WB). Your best friend will not appreciate looking like a member of the blue man group on her wedding day. Trust me.

The first thing i do before i take a picture is set the WB. I look around, take a few shots and figure out what the kind of colour temperature I’m dealing with ie. overhead tungsten lights, blinding fluorescents, daylight through a window, etc. and then set the white balance to best match what I see.

If you don’t know what to set the WB to when you are out in the field, then test it using that big screen on the back of your camera that lets you preview photos! Take a few snaps using different WB settings, and decide which best matches the colour of light you see. This may seem tricky, but dicerning between cloudy and sunny isn’t really that tough. And with some practice, you’ll quickly be able to identify trickier things tungsten bulbs and candlelight and mixed light… oh boy.

When you are dealing with a mixed light situation ie., florecent overhead lights, daylight coming in through a big window, use your judgement. What looks the best? Get into the habit of analyzing colour and light and experiment with different WB settings in camera. It’s a really easy thing to do, and will save you a lot of hassle colour correcting in post especially if you haven’t mastered Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, or “computers” in general.

To learn more, read this article.

That concludes my lecture for today. Give your camera some extra love this week and take a stack of awesome photos celebrating this last week of summer. If you live in Vancouver or England, remember to bring your umbrella!

Women of New Media on Twit live Photo by Tony Wang | Molly, Lisa, Justine, Sarah, Amber & Leo.

I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing and talented ladies at last week’s New Media Expo. It was weird how we just all happened to wander on TWiT Live at the same time. I think we were lured there by the heaps of tasty brain toniq, TWiT tees & Leo’s mega-watt smile.

Amber MacArthur, Sarah Austin, Molly Lynn & I had a great discussion on women in media, edited vs. unedited content & live streaming, trolls, and something I call the “blogging bikini factor”. Shameless? Yes. Quadruples your daily uniques? Definitely. But I wouldn’t know anything about that. At. All.

I need to catch some serious zzzs tonight as I will need my stamina during the shenanigans iJustine, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Sarah of Pop17 will inevitably get up to.

Follow me on twitter, viddler, flickr and the official NME site.

Is anyone else going to the New Media Expo? Hope to see you there!

Healing time

Aug 11 2008

i has computer over-use injury

I’m sorry for the lack of posts, but my horrible computer over-use neck injury is taking it’s darn sweet time to heal. Apparently, these muscle-tendon injuries need longer than a day to heal. I know! What’s with that? And if you continue to work in anti-ergonomic conditions for 18+ hours a day, the injury comes back! Harsh.

It has been agony cutting out all computer activities for the last week, but I’ve been so good and not blogged at all for a whole week. But, I miss you all so much I just thought I’d throw up a cool picture that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy about the world, that I took with the Canon 70-200mm IS f/2.8 lens I love so much. This was the first image that I edited and adjusted in Adobe Lightroom 2. So far so good. I’ll write a full review when I’m a bit better.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 is available today!

Jul 29 2008

Mostly Lisa's first look at Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2

If you listen to TWIP, you’ll know about Fredrick VanScott Bourne’s on-going Adobe’s Lightroom vs Apple’s Aperture debate. Scott swears by Aperture and at Lightroom & Fred’s sweet on LR2.

It’s quite childish really, considering Scott just abandoned Canon for the Nikon D3. hmph! Plus, who starts arguments over technogeeky topics? No one that I know personally, as in not being that person directly. Huh? Exactly. I’ve discombobulated you have I?

When I was down in SF visiting the TWIP team, I was put in the hot seat and forced to pick a side. But, the truth was, I had never used either Aperture or Lightroom. And so a challenge began between Scott & Fred to see which of these two powerful photo editing and management tools would win my little n00b heart.

I’m installing LR2 this very moment and am really pumped about the new features Adobe is offering in this latest update. For more info, check out Fred’s LR2 post. I’m also excited about starting to shoot more in RAW. I think it is the only way of getting the quality, sharpness, and perfect lighting I want in my photos.

My only concern with Lightroom is how it will work with iPhoto as we all know iPhoto and Adobe aren’t the greatest of pals and the interface doesn’t look as clean and apple-icious as Aperture. But, beyond that, I have no leanings towards either, so I am coming into this challenge completely unbiased. Though Fred is pulling out all the stops with his traffic-stopping smile!

Fred is such a tease

If you want to check out Adobe Lightroom 2, you can download a 30 day trial here.

Have your say on the Aperture vs Lightroom debate. What do you use? And why?

Mostly Lisa & UK Theme Park, Alton Towers

Jul 28 2008

… usual hi-jinks ensue. Those Brits sure know how to make some sweet rides. Nemesis was definitely the big daddy, with Oblivion close behind. I’m glad I ate my huge portion of Fish and Chips after riding the big guns. Though my stomach was no so stoked about the combination of mushy peas and the hardcore Nutty Squirrel ride.

Oh & check out my Alton Towers Flickr photo set.

PS. I used almost every iLife iMovie packaged tune in the making of this vid. I hope I used alll your favs. Hoorah for Roller Derby!
