Wired!

Mostly Lisa is Wired

I’m guess I”m pretty wired. I’m probably the most wired person I know. So I’m probably the most wired person you know cuz I have over 200 friends on facebook (and I know at least 10 of them in real life). Yeah whatever, I guess you could say I’m pretty popular.

Being wired means being connected to a something bigger and better, someone who knows everything the world has to offer like Wikipedia. What? Wikipedia isn’t one person? Whatever.

The point is wired things > wireless things. Wait? That’s not true. Wireless things are way better. In fact, I hate wires and cables and plugs. Just look at them all. I’m practically swimming in the things. I’ve lost my momentum now. I’m not even making sense.

What was the point again?

I’m popular?
No, not that.
I’m good looking?
Well, that’s obvious, but not the point of this post.
Making myself look cooler by bragging about how many gadgets/gear/puters I have?
Closer.
And cuz I spent all my money on gadgets/gear/puters, I can’t afford to go to Macworld and that makes me feel left out and kinda lonely to be honest.

Now it’s all coming out. Buck up! There’s more to life than seeing Stevie J’s keynote live.
There is?
No, I was lying to make you feel better.

Mostly Lisa’s Favourite Top Gear:

  1. My MB. It’s ace. I love it. I’d choose it over a MBP any day.
  2. My Canon Rebel Xti or D400. This SLR has literally changed my life. I got it last November and started shooting for both pleasure and for my multimedia company guided by photo manuals and Strobist. The day I got paid for taking photos was a beautiful day. That’s when I thought, “You can get paid for doing something this cool, seriously??”
  3. My Canon 50mm f1.4 lens. I am passionate about this lens. It truly makes *magic* happen.
  4. My 2 Canon HV20 Digital Camcorders. The bread and butter of my business. It has been an excellent camera. It’s portable, HD picture quality is great, and the 24p mode is l33tne$$.

What are your favourite gadgets? I will accept all comments. Even those with PC-based answers. I’m that open in my love of gadgets. I will now lie back on my ibook pillow, put bjork on, and stare blankly into space transcending time. Huh? My point exactly.

MB better than MBP? Actually? Seriously?
I just got my MBP (i know you said not to but the price was right) and its awesome.

    – 17″ MBP & 500 Ex HD
    – iPhone 8Gb
    – iPod 60Gb (cause ive got loads of music and back up for files)
    – Casio Exilim something-or-other tiny 4mp digital camera. Its on 4mp but does the job well and is pretty small so i carry it round in my pocket

    Hey, cool!

Thanks for the Strobist shoutout! But the question is, what are you *listening* to in the photo?

@Chris — seriously. i wanted a MBP soooo bad before but they’ve had so many problems with them i’m glad i didn’t. or maybe i’m just jealous because i can’t afford one. either way, welcome to MacLand. we’re glad you could finally join us.

@David Hobby — wow! Strobist.. on ma blag?!? sweet. you’re very welcome. your blog is truly inspirational and all your frugal make-your-own-photo-bits has made it possible for me to take the photos i where and when i want to take instead of waiting for the 5 mins of daylight and squishing things and foam core whiteboards in front of my living room window. myself and others who have been squished against said window are very thankful!

    * My MacBook. I too couldn’t afford a MBP, so I opted for the Black MacBook. Actually, I could have afforded the MBP, but I wouldn’t have had any extra money for Apple Care or software (my POS VAIO died at a very, very, very inopportune time, the week before school started in August – I was hoping to hold out until November…it was not to be). So I’m with you – MB ftw! Plus I get looks from all the boys at Starbucks. But that could be my boobs. Who knows.

    * My 60 GB black iPod video. Cos It’s pretty and it stores about 1/3 of my music.

    * My TiVos – I can’t live without them. They rule all.

    * My DVD collection. Not a gadget perse, but I’ve put too much money into it (it makes me physically ill to contemplate) not to mention.

    * My high-end Denon receiver that is absolutely overpowered for my needs but that my friend at Denon got me for under cost. That and I like to annoy the upstairs neighbors when their dog goes nuts by blasting Nine Inch Nails. Works for the next door neighbors when they fight too.

    * My digital camera – it’s incredibly tiny – it takes surprisingly good pictures, it’s INCREDIBLY tiny (Nikon S51). I want an DSLR but I have like a ton of old school Nikon lenses and I just don’t have $1200 to spend on a worthwhile body right now. My HDTV is on the fritz and I need to decide if I’m going to repair it or get an LCD HD replacement.

Oh – and I couldn’t afford to go to Macworld either – so let’s revel in our fate as girls who overconsume and thus can’t afford to go to glossy trade shows together!

@Christina — oh how i love your comments! a black MB!! how very goth of you. a daring move, i’ll give you that. black is slimming. maybe if you squint your eyes a little it will look half as thin as the MB Air. bollocks! i hate when apple releases a newer version of a product that i have.

i once calculated the money i spent on my DVD box sets and it made me giggle in an uncomfortable way.. but then i thought, i don’t drink coffee (caffeine makes me crazy) or alcohol (makes me violently ill) and i don’t smoke (even though celebrities make it seem super cool and sexy), i don’t like jewelry (i’m vehemently opposed to blood diamonds or any sparkly bits mined in horrid conditions) and (don’t hate me Carrie) high-heeled/strappy/sparkly shoes (though i do like boots which are fashionable, yet comfortable), so my point is, i don’t have many expensive vices so spending money on uber movies and shows that i can watch over and over and share with my friends doesn’t seem soooo bad…. even if the total came to a 4 followed by 3 zeros. yikkkkkes.

That is some nice fancy dancy equip!
I would have to say im lacking quite a bit in this world these days. I know you wouldnt like to hear it but I have a HP laptop, im surprised it has lived as long as it has. Broken digital camera and a very old FM/AM alarm clock.
But what I would do to have a Canon HV20 camera…. your a lucky girl!

@ComposeAnalysis — HP oooooooohhh nooo. i’ll pretend i didn’t hear that. but, to be extra honest, i’ll admit to using a PC in my undergrad days. i know. it’s a blow, but back then they weren’t compatible and you just had to conform to what the uni was using. and my alarm clock is a $9 travel alarm that has two settings on and off. it doesn’t play any music but it’s wake up beep is the most annoying noise you have ever heard, which is necessary to get me out of my lovely warm bed any time before 2pm.

PS the HV20 is super ace and super affordable for the quality it gives you. and if you buy it at best buy or futureshop you can pay it off over year, instead of one huge lump of dosh!

Oooh.. I missed this post! I’ve started getting paid for photography as well, and it’s very cool. Although, to be honest, I don’t think I’d want to do it full time, because then it might not be fun anymore. I shot the Vancouver Fashion Week last month or whatever and I found it sort of boring to be honest. Most of the models clearly weren’t into it, and it was almost a chore to try and get them to pose.

I picked up the Canon 40D 3 months ago and I love it! Plus an iPod touch. And my new iMac. And my Macbook Pro. Yes, it’s been an expensive tech year, but I’m loving it. And the 50mm f/1.4 rocks (I have one too!) We go on lots of photo walks downtown — I just organized one last week on the beach where about 20 internet ppl showed up. You should come out to the next one!
