Geeky Stuff

Nominated for Wired Sexy Geek of 2007. But why so sad?

a sad geek

Behind my subtle smirk, and black bikini that matches my silver classic 80 iPod, there is a sad sad girl. Why am i so sad? Because although I’ve been nominated for the Wired Sexy Geek of 2007 (thanks Ry and Tom), no one is voting for me. In fact, 2 people have given me two thumbs down.

vote for me

That hurts guys. Well, it’s really your loss as i was planning on sending each of my supporters a copy of:

1. my swimsuit calendar;
2. my Master’s thesis;
3. sexy lessons in OS X.

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but my thesis makes a mighty fine conversation piece for that next social mixer you are planning. Wow, that a really long book. Yeah, sure is. What’s it about? Range Exploration of Phonation and Pitch in the First Six Months of Life. Oh cool. What’s faux nation? Is that like a new app on facebook? Exactly.

So noble friends and fans of Mostly Lisa, i ask you kindly, on behalf of my fleeting self-esteem and my need to be as publicly vindicated as pink haired Brit Brit, please vote for me. It’s basically like emailing your heart to me, except less creepy.

Too cute Lisa! A little shameless self-promotion never hurts, especially if it has its intended effect. Way to go! I just voted for you and you’re way sexier and loads more geeky than those other wanna-be’s on Wired!

aww thanks Carrie! it does feel quite shameless, but i absolutely loooove Wired magazine, so i’m willing to compromise a wee bit of modesty for a chance at a small thumbnail on pg 14. so totally worth it!

You really don’t need to be so sad. Others people (like me) discovered you (and your web site) through this vote.

And you can be sure about one thing, if they think you’re not sexy, it’s only that they prefer men ;)

Got your note from you from Pownce and just voted for you!
Don’t worry about the voting, You already define sexy in your own unique way. The others just happen to be in the more mainstream spotlight. Thats the only reason they are probably getting more votes. Those that voted for you know it to be true! ;-)

    Have a great day!

I think you need a different photo on there personally. I’m thinking something less glam and more shall I say “cute.”

@Rasta Knight — thanks for your vote. glad you discovered my humble blog. nice to meet you!

@Joey — thanks for the Pownce love. it’s tough being in the underground sexy geek scene, but i’d rather stay an indie all-star than sell-out to every new shiny 2.0 that pops up on the www. plus, apple never gives away free shwag to even the most devoted fan girls.

(aside: if any 2.0s are hiring, i’ve got plenty of bikinis and booth babe experience)

@Nate — thanks. VB is indeed lovely. if i don’t win, i’d feel ok about her taking first spot. it’s true, that photo is not really representative of me on a daily basis as i rarely have the time to photoshop myself before i go out.

@CareySaysUms — thanks! if only i didn’t have 20/20 vision. curses. *pokes fork in eye* ouch.

Ive voted a few times now but im only 1 man! Maybe you should start hosting a podcast like Veronica and then more people would see you.

Wow – just voted for you because you have such wise eyes!

@JJ — thanks! wise eyes indeed.

@Chris — i thank you for your diligence! i have some regular podcast/vodcast stuff in the planning stages. lately, I’ve just been trying sooooo hard to design my company’s web site as it’s been coming soon for a year now. horrible. must finish it!

but honestly, what would you want my podcast to be about? tech/gadget/2.0 stuff (there are so many already doing that scene: Webb, VB, iJustine, Amber Mac… the list goes on and on) or would you like a full serving of Mostly Lisa mutli-genre geekiness?

  • Chris
    January 14, 2008 at 8:25 AM

But do any of them present it in a bikini? Im not looking to perve but it could be your edge. Im sure your BF would have some objection but it could make you rich in the long run.

I think a general “geek/cool/interesting/funny stuff by lisa” would be ok. Just got keep it fresh and interesting. Im bored of iJustine now. The Mahalo podcast is cool cause its so varied in its subject matter.

I voted for you. And don’t sweat the down votes – most of those are the self-proclaimed nerd police who are down-voting girls are are sexier than they are nerdy. In the immortal words of….almost all…hip-hop artists, let ’em hate. Hmm…that sounded cooler in my head.

@Chris — thanks for the tips. i’ll buff up my bikinis for a geeky/cool/funny podcast!

@Matt — hi-5 for the vote and the compliment. PS. most of the things i say sound way funnier in my head. i also have a habit of starting to tell a half a story out loud and finishing the funny bit in my head and then laughing at my own joke that no one heard and then feeling really socially awkward.

If you have to dress up in hot pink negligee, dye your hair platinum blonde, and go by Marina to win our admiration, respect and, ahem, our respect, then are we really worthy?

Then again, you could always *try*…

  • Mostly Lisa
    January 16, 2008 at 11:14 PM

@Monica — you too! thanks for the vote!

@djh — you know i do have a pretty wicked photo of me in a white bikini wearing a big Russian fur hat. and i do know a couple “enhancement” tricks in photo shop to add volume and dimension to, ahem, boob shaped objects. do you think that might help my cause?

Oh *that* picture…I think I found it already. Pity I can’t post it on your website for everybody’s reading pleasure…

Was quite surprised how well everything fits in the box, so to speak.

It just dawned on me what this competition is really about: Bipolar Women Of the Week – not sure if they are sexy or geeky. Can you imagine how confusing that is to a guy meeting such a person?

Ext: Geeky dude meets what he thinks is a geeky girl, in the CompSci library:
Guy: “So, do you mind if I borrow your notes on Chomsky Normal Form?” [don’t ask how I know that]
Girl: “Yes, here they are. Oh by the way…” (peels of milk-bottle glasses, lets down hair, lets zip down on kagool to her cleavage, and strokes neck) “…how about you come over to practice parsing those sentences?”

    THE NEXT DAY”
Ext: School Jock struts up to the same girl, in the midst of her Sandi-nerd/Sandy-hot chick from Grease transformation. She’s in black leather tight trousers, red stiletto mules and a boob-busting leather top.
Guy: Hey, I hear you’re quite a cunning linguist – that geek is tripping over himself. What did you do to him? And hey, wanna try the same thing on me tonight when you do my homework?
Girl: Ah, er, erm, I have chess club tonight and then I’m helping my dad rebuild the Ford’s engine. But if you don’t mind waiting until my violin lesson is over, maybe I can do your calculus then. I-is t-that OK?

    And hence, I nominate Lisa…

    January 21, 2008 at 4:39 AM

@djh — ahh so true. us sexy geeky women are so confusing. but that’s all part of the mystery, the allure of the cunning linguist, isn’t it? [and yes i would like to know where you learnt sentence parsing. perhaps while i’m slowly taking my red specs off, shaking loose my long, flowing hair, and gently stroking my… Macbook… oh hey a new tweet from engaget… more news about the new MB air. yeah, that looks super l33t! wow. and with solid state i bet they’ll be super zippy… oh sorry, got distracted there…

@smilry — hey thanks! i’m glad someone gets a kick outta my infant acoustics research. it was super interesting at the time, i just felt continuing in the same path wouldn’t reveal any life-altering findings. but who knows, there might still be a Phd in me yet….

BTW, did you see Test The Nation on Sunday? One of the teams was Bloggers, and it had TWO of the finalists for Wired’s Geek Of the Week in the audience – they interviewed them.

I have the video. Maybe I’ll upload it, the same time I upload that pic of you I found? You can see your competition.

    There were mingers, BTW.

PS i had to look up what a minger was. came across this website. enjoy.
