Mostly 007 & The Quantum of Solace

lisabettanyaudition

Revenge is bitter sweet for Bond. In the latest 007 flick Quantum of Solace, Bond is heartbroken and haggard, as he tirelessly pursues the evil villain who killed his recent lover, Vesper Lynd.

Instead of dealing with these complex emotions in therapy, Bond blows off some steam by chasing down evil villains in cars, boats, planes, motorbikes, and on foot, all the while maintaining an unflappable charm that makes the ladies swoon. But this time Bond isn’t interested in romance. Well, maybe a quickie just for good measure, but love is not in the cards this time out. Even the smoldering Russian-Bolivian temptress, Camille, might have a tricky time peeling Bond out of those skintight, dirty, bloodstained white slacks. Poor fashion choice Bond. If you know you’re going to get in a bloody battle, wear something darker, a deep mahogany perhaps.

Alas, Bond has less time for such sartorial considerations in this dark and gritty installment to the series. Not even a sixth martini at the bar is able to dispel the dark clouds gathered over our favourite super-spy, and that’s saying something. The Big Bad, a mysterious organization known as Quantum, is causing major problems for MI6, and at the heart of it is Dominic Greene, an evil rich guy posing as a philanthropic environmentalist. Let’s just say that Dr. Greene is the type of guy who might take his social responsibility to an extreme – actively recycling paper, plastics, and people parts on a daily basis.

Like Bond’s various nemeses throughout the history of the franchise, Greene takes his plot cues from the top headlines of today. This time, the global threat of peak oil takes centre stage over previous Bondian concerns such as Communist-controlled nuclear missiles, terrorist plots, the dealing of weapons/diamonds/drugs, or weapons that shoot diamonds with drugs in them. Okay, maybe they haven’t made a movie about that last one (yet), but this time the villain is an evil tree-hugger that is green-thumbing his nose at all things good and true with a plot that would leave the whole world at his mercy.

Any outing with 007 is sure to provide thrills, and this film doesn’t waste any time in packing a major punch of adrenalin. The action is fast, furious, and fantastic. Anything a person could drive and blow up was driven and then blown up at some point by our hero. Vroom, vroom, kaboom.

This is definitely the best movie I have seen all year. For my tastes it had a perfect balance of 90% action and 10% showing-off of sleek, fancy gadgets. Also, Daniel Craig is stunning in this movie and his unique physicality, brutish and elegant in turns, makes him the best Bond yet.

What do you think? Who is your favourite Bond?

PS. I still don’t know why they didn’t cast me as evil Bond Girl Irina Secsibuti. What a mystery. I mean they even had a Canadian Bond Girl in Quantum of Solace. I bet her nun-chuck skills are rubbish.

OOOOHHHHH yAAAAAAAAA – I couldn’t ask for a better present for my birthday. In college it seemed as though they’d run the James Bond marathon right at finals time every year – so we’d veg infront of the dorm floor TV and let our grades slip.

They’re so exciting I can’t fall asleep after watching them.

Totally cant wait to get the new dose!

The whole Bond thing just eludes me completely. I never got it, and I’ve pretty much concluded that I never will.

Roger Moore was my favorite Bond. Now, how about asking what our favorite Bond car was? The submersible Lotus Esprit from “The Spy Who Loved Me” is mine.

Maybe you didn’t make it this time – but if they ever make a 007 plot set in Canada, you are a shoe in!

I thought you’d have nailed the part with the nunchucks!

As a child of the 80’s, I have to admit that for years it was Roger Moore or nothing, Moonraker notwithtsanding. To me, there is no such thing as a bad Bond movie.

But Roger has some (MEGA HOT) competition now! I loves me some of this Daniel Craig dude. What a handsome, brooding Bond, he be!

Dr. No: “East….West…both just points of the compass, both just as stupid as the other.
    I’m a member of SPECTRE.”
    Bond: “SPECTRE?”
Dr. No: “SPECTRE. SPecial Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge, Extortion. The four great cornerstones of power, each headed by the greatest brains in the world.”
    Bond: “Correction. Criminal brains.”
Dr. No: “The successful criminal brain is always superior. It has to be.”

-from the First James Bond film, “Dr. No”.

As a child of the 70’s who saw his first Bond of “For Your Eyes Only” my fave bond must be Roger Moore. He delivered the best one liners and delivered the best mix of action and fun.

I think he’s coming out to Australia this month to promote his new book so will have to get an autograph.

Roger Moore has always been my favorite James Bond, but I can totally see Daniel Craig as 007.

So, is Irina Secsibuti in any way related to Ivana Humpalot???

I think Daniel Craig is a great James Bond, Pierce Brosnan was excellent too.

I was never a big fan of Roger Moore. I think he added too much comedy to the series.

Regarding Quantum, it lacks the James Bond-ish style of some of the other movies. Casino Royale had a casino and a head-to-head poker game against Le Chiffre, who even had a mean henchman.

Quantum is more of a Jason Bourne kinda film. Gadgets and actions is cool, but there is something missing.

Your video is hilarious!! I love when you shoot the guy with a dart!

As for Bond, when I was growing up I only new Roger Moore as Bond. But, later when I saw Sean Connery’s Bond, I said, “Dood, Roger Moore is a wimp!” Still, I think the revivial of the franchise taking place with Daniel Craig is really awesome. The new Casino Royale is by far my favourite Bond movie, and I can’t wait to see the new one!! =D

The plot was too layered. You really like watching blunt things like stuff blowing up and car chases? cool, that’s like every other movie anyway.

Casino Royal was written so much better. a storyline is so much more important than stupid action (which is nice in moderation).

Quantum of Solace was entertaining for sure, but sometimes i got the feeling that the movie was making fun of itself… every pane of glass Bond crosses has to break, he can’t get a gallon of milk from the store without it turning into a chase scene, and every time he punches someone in the face, they die

“Do you want to play this the hard way”… squirt.

I just laughed out loud. Great vid, and the Bond Dept. is desperately in need of your talents.

I don’t think anyone will ever top Connery, but Craig has done so much to revive the JB franchise. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie. Even if there’s no nunchuks. =]
