Geeky Stuff

Current Obsessions

1. Gordon Ramsay’s potty mouth.

“Now reach in your pants and find your bollocks!” PS. how many mls is a knob of butter anyway?

2. Sufjan Stevens marathons.

143 plays last week according to lastfm. i find ol’ Sufjan maximizes my productivity with minimal distractions and doesn’t depress me or prompt unnecessary introspection like most of my music in the indie/folk genre.

3. Funny British TV shows.

All these years I just thought I had an disagreeable sense of humour. Now I find an entire nation with dry, sarcastic, self-ridiculing, awkward humour. I finally belong! Long live the BBC! Fawlty Towers. Peep Show. Fonejacker. Trigger Happy. The Office. Extras (except for the depressing and disappointing Christmas special. booo!)

4. iChat screen sharing.

It never gets old for me. What desktop do you have? What programs are in your dock? Stacks or no stacks? How do I do xyz? Oh you can show me, on MY screen? hizzah! It’s also extremely useful for controlling your desktop from your laptop.

5. Making up my own spelling and punctuation rules.

Language is about communication. Do you understand teh zani LOL Catz? ROFL? Thought so. Language is constantly evolving, so why should we adhere to ancient, stodgy grammar rules or completely opaque orthography?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m still gonna judge you as slightly incompetent, if you don’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re” or “to”, “too”, and “two” or spell “definitely” “definately”. That’s a given. But if you already know the basics and have good enough eye sight to see the angry, red dotted line under your erroneous spelling, starting a sentence with “because” or “but” or choosing to not use capitalization of “i” isn’t the Worst. Thing. Ever. especially in a landscape as vast, diverse, and continually changing as the www. So I say, let’s get creative with language!

6. Procrastinating.

Must design superwikkybooyah web site for my media company. Uhh. Too hard. Where do I even start? Best Web Gallery? Uhh. Look at all these amazing sites. I’ll never be able to do that. Procrastinate. Eat biscuits. Another cup of tea. 7 months pass. Uhh. I should really get on that web site. How do I get from nothing –> great web site? Procrastinate. Eat chocolate pudding. Pirate. Arrange transformers. Blog. Uhh. 2 more months pass. I should really break this down into manageable pieces. Good thought. *draws a tree-like mind map* That’s good for today. Now, where did I put those biscuits?

    One of the best things from linguistics classes was learning how to spell FISH the linguistic way:

    ghoti

    gh = /f/ as in ‘enough’
    o = /I/ as in women
    ti = /sh/ as in nation

    let’s just say that English is jacked up. but it’s fun that way.

    Oh I thought the Extras Christmas special was good. Being an Englishman it is not too hard to find other who share my dry, sarcastic, self-deprivation awkward humour.

    1. I watched Kitchen Nightmares last night. my plonker isn’t meant to be yanked.

    2. Sufjan doesn’t work for me. it’s an all Jamiroquai retropective when I want to feel happy and productive. it’s all el-p/non-phixion/(insert cosmic rapper here) when I want to feel amped up and productive.

    3. Extras, The Office….yep, those are hilarious.

    4. sold my Mac. working on PC. getting a new Mac. miss my old Mac. sigh.

    5. e. e. cummings said it best: “may it not be tricksy.”

    6. I’ll read part this later. I’m going through the same thing. I’m trying to decide if I want my new site to have a distinct theme/rhythm or if I just want the canvas to serve as a backdrop to my work. visiting sites like this: http://www.bryankatzel.com/ doesn’t help.

    Ah yes, you have influenced me to join lastfm. I have to wait till the building’s internet speeds up some so I dont have to witness dial-up all over again.

    @Mitchell — fo. sho’.

    @caddyshack — not a ‘worb’ no. i changed it though. hope you feel satisfied with yourself. any snow pictures?

    @James — no really? you haaaaaave to admit, it wasn’t nearly as funny as the others. and what was with that music? Stephan Merchant was the only bright light in that episode. he kept it light. after all, the show is all about having a laugh, no?

    @RBeezy — nice Ramsay quote. i really should write them down. carry them around with me on a notepad and just unleash Ramsay ziggers onto unsuspecting people. i think it would make me more popular? what do you think?

    @ComposeAnalysis — Cadbury’s chocolate covered ones. i just bought a deluxe variety pack. though i was quite unsettled when they changed the name of the chocolate orange heart to “Artificially-flavoured Chocolate Hearts”. ahh well, it’s all the same once you dip it in tea.

    For some reason I thought it was actually funnier than the others. Maybe it was just because I hadn’t seen Extras for a while, so it was fresh. Given it was the last episode they had to bring it to a conclusion as well, and I thought they did that well.

    Steve Merchant (Darren Lamb) is the best character though.

    Oh I’ve just realised why our views might differ. I saw a program where they explained how a lot of English jokes were swapped for American ones in the US version. But they were criticising how a lot of the conversions were really naff and didn’t work. So if you saw the US version that might be why you didn’t find it so funny.

    Gordon Ramsay rules. He’s harsh but he knows what he wants and will kick your ass until you deliver.

    Peep Show and Phonejacker are about my favourite comedy shows on British TV. You should also check out That Mitchell and Webb Look and Black Books. Classics.
