Aperture Nature Photography Workshop

Canada Goose Neck
This goose is 100% Canadian just like me. He even said “aboot”.

Next week, I am heading to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, along with 8 amazing photographers for the first Aperture Nature Photography Workshop in Grand Teton National Park.

The workshop brings together the wisdom and experince of 3 pro photographers, award-winning photojournalist Steve Simon, travel & stock photographer, Scott Stulberg & TWiP’s leading man Scott Bourne, with the enthusiasm of the 4 amateur photographers and me!

Lisa with 70-200mm on Kits Beach
Gabriel Morosan snapped this candid of me on Kits Beach with the 70-200mm.

I’ll be blogging, vlogging, and documenting all the inspirational moments in the Grand Tetons and no doubt I’ll get up to some mischief at some point :D.

The amateurs were selected amongst thousands of talented phtoographers who entered their best nature or wildlife shot in the contest. You can see their stunning photos here.

Besides getting to learn from some of the best photographers in the business, the contest winners get some sweet prizes as well (USB Drobo, ThinkTank photo bag, Aperture, Lifetime Photrade membership…). As the official blogger, I may be privy to these prizes as well.

I’m so psyched about the ThinkTank rotation360 bag. I’ve been using the Lowepro Computrekker AW bag and it sits so high on my back that it completely messes up my centre of balance, and I have literally been knocked off my feet more than once. Both of those times being on the London Underground. Don’t worry, no biscuits were injured during the fall, only my knees and elbows.

Lisa & Lowepro Computrekker AWWith all my gear, this bag weighed 7.5kg (16lbs). Yikes. See what’s inside.

I think this will be a life-changing experience for me. Getting the chance to learn from these great photographers is truly priceless. Plus, Scott has promised to let me have go on his Nikon D3. My lil Rebel Xti is already pouting.

There are three more ANPW contests to Olympic, Yosemite, and Yellowstone National Parks, so if you are budding nature/wildlife photographer, I really encourage you to enter the next competition. You may even get to hang out with me. :p I’ll let you know when the next contest deadline is announced. Until then, get inspired and head outside and snap some awesome nature photos.

And remember to join my photography competition group on flickr and post your best shot of the summer. You’ve got until noon Thursday, Sept 18th to enter your photo.

That rocks! You are lucky. Did you win the contest or did you get an invite to it? Which photo was yours?

You got an invite to the workshop?! That rocks! That is one contest that I really want to win, along with the other 1,100 people out there.

That photo of you on the beach is awesome! How far away was the photographer when they took the shot?

Canadian geese are great to take shots of. I spent a whole day in Princes Island Park in Calgary one day taking photos of baby geese. They’re so amazing the way the little goslings scurry around behind the big mummy goose. They seem very happy to get nice and close for photos too :) I’ve posted a couple of my pics from that day on my personal blog (see my website link to see them).

I’m extremely excited to be going on this trip. Learning from the best (and these guys are the best!) is the best prize of the bunch (although my Aperture demo expired the day I found out I won!). See you on the trip!

Very cool. I’ve been trying to squeeze a workshop like this into my busy travel schedule for years. And I’m keen to hear how you like the ThinkTank. My ProTrekker is too big for a human to lift, and my Domke shoulder bag is only good for short treks.

My 5D is right there on the pout bench with your Xti. Somehow it knows I’ve been reading about the 5D mark II this morning.

@Ryan lol any of the birds here in Canada (especially Vancouver) are great to take photos of because a) there are so many and b) they are used to humans being around so they don’t get scared off. You can get pretty close to them. Though watch out for some geese, they like to try and bite you!

Lisa that is cool you get to go out on this adventure with some pro-photographers who will teach their ways! I’m so jealous and I want the opportunity one day to be able to do the same thing! I love photography and I want to get more into it! Perhaps my XSi can meet up with you XTi and they can mingle and you can give me tips!

I love the Tetons! While in JH, I highly suggest dinner at Rendezvous Bistro. You won’t regret it. You’ll also need to be sure to have some Fat Tire and Mirror Pond beer. Great stuff that can be easily found in JH. I’m so jealous!

If you have extra time, Cirque of the Towers is a very cool area outside JH: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirque_of_the_Towers

Steve Simon is one of my heroes. You’re so lucky to be friends with the TWIP crew. :) Although since it’s wildlife, I’m sure the two Scotts will be taking the lead for the most part.

By the way, I know that Canadians aren’t eligible for TWIP contests…but can I enter and have them send prizes to Point Roberts…then pick up from there? It’s not even a PO box.

    @ Ryan — Looks like about 90 feet if at f2.8 & 200 mm (I’m guessing it’s with a 70-200 f2.8…)http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Looks like a wicked awesome trip! Don’t get caught with the Nikon bug!
