Leopard sucksbollocks

I thought that the latest OSX update, 10.5.2 would fix my whoas with Leopard. Not. so. much. Safari, iChat, iMovie crashes are still plentiful, as well as complete system hangs. And yesterday my Mac Pro woke up from an hour long sleep with this lovely multilingual message plastered on it’s screen:

Mac Error message

Now granted I push my Macs to the brink with all the media stuff I’ve got constantly churning away, but seriously, if Safari crashes one more time, I might… uh… write Steve an angry note? uh… use the Leopard disc as a frisbee? uh… threaten to rename this latest update 10.5.sucksbollocks? Yeah. That’s what I’ll do! And don’t try and talk me out of it. This is no flimsy threat!

I wanna know if you’re experiencing the same suckiness with Leopard. If you experience a crash or hang on Leopard, vent your frustrations in the comments below.

PS. I promise to write about something that does not suck tomorrow.

Still using the good old Tiger on 10.4.11.

Tell you I have always wondered. How do they decided when an upgrade is worth a point (i.e. from 10.3 to 10.4) or a point point (i.e. from 10.3 to 10.3.1) or even a whole number (i.e. why is Leopard not Mac OS XI ?

Tiger is still solid as a rock on my machine (iMac Core Duo 1.83Ghz with 1gb RAM) with only the occasional crashing (once a month stuff if that).

Don’t get too frustrated with it, it is only a computer :)

Still on Tiger… Can’t afford Leopard. But it’s nice to hear the truth from you. I also subscribe to TUAW and of course they monly give out praise. :)

@Mark – when they do a major overhaul, they get a new .number – IE there’s a big system jump from 10.4 to 10.5 – these are often noticed in GUI updates, but I’m sure there’s a LOT more going on under the hood. When they do an update to that (IE fix bugs, crash issues, add better stability) they give it a new .number.number, for instance 10.4.3 looks a lot like 10.4.2, but it 10.4.3 probably will run a lot better.

    Hope that helps.

I’ve been using Leopard since it came out, no problems whatsoever (I have lots of stuff I use), although I have heard of friends having lots of problems with it, not my case. Just plain luck I guess =)

Reinstalling the OS from scratch maybe? Specially if all you did was upgrade.

For some reason my desktop icons had stopped working and my Hard Drive name was erased. I have had to reinstall Leopard several times. Not sure why i shouldn’t just put Tiger back on.

    Love the blog though!

Did you do an erase and install upgrade? Installing operating systems via an upgrade is always asking for trouble :)

I recommend dedicating a day doing a clean install, upgrading to 10.5.2 and then all the applications…

No problems for me in Leopard besides Adobe CS3 issues with cursors flicking back and forth when utilizing spaces.

Boo for your Leopard woes! I’ve been much luckier (the only real issue I had was with BitTorrent and Leopard, but 10.5.2 fixed that now I can get my TV shows without kernel panicking), but I know that some people have had issues.

I’ll agree with Max — maybe do a full back-up and then reinstall from scratch? I have to do that sometime this week myself. I tend to mess with far too many things far too often and it’s just time to do it. I just always hate having to back-up the music collection I keep on the internal hard drive.

10.5.sucksbollocks is a pretty awesome name. It sounds way smarter than what I would call it (10.5.sucksass).

I found Leopard to be 17% slower than Tiger on my Powerbook G4. That’s a clean install vs. a clean install.

The slowdown on top of Leopard’s serious case of the crashies convinced me to stay on Tiger for a few more point releases. (I keep Leopard installed on an external FW drive, just to see if it’s gotten better. It’s still slow.)

I have not upgraded . . . yet. I have read that reinstalling from scratch is the way to go with Leopard, though.

When I upgrade (after a couple of projects), I think I will start with a brand new hard drive (or erase the current drive).

When I got my G4 all those years ago, I opened it, found a wireless connection and off we went. I didn’t bother with any of the software that came with it. I still haven’t…3 years later. So…essentially my MAC is slow and useless just like it’s owner. But I still love it cuz it’s pretty.

    Hi, Lisa!

I had similar problem twice in Leopard. The unique solution that works for my mac is reinstalling from scratch.

In both cases the problem was old software (‘software not ready for Leopard’) installed in Mac OS X. And the other bad things is that you can not switch back to Tiger from 10.5, because it’s too cool :(

    February 26, 2008 at 1:20 PM

    @micah
Thanks for that. You say a “major overhaul” is a jump in a point (e.g. 10.4 to 10.5). So what is a jump from 10 to 11? A major major overhaul?

Still puzzled as to how they decide :)

That suckz0r! One thing that gets me is can’t apple be arsed to write a kernel panic in the language of the user account rather than that multilingual effort?

Anyway, you really aren’t selling Leopard to me, I’m still running Tiger, and since I bought my Mac, it has only crashed/hiccuped once in 6 months, and that was my printers fault so it doesn’t count.

Have you considered this could be a cry for attention with all the time you have spent lusting over the MacBook Air recently?

P.s. Good continuing use of ‘bollocks’.

@ Mark, I read an article on Ars some time ago that discussed the whole OS X numbering conventions. I’ll have to find it.

I guess they’ve stuck with the whole OS X/10 bit for the time being as .2, .3, .4, .5 versions are all major revisions of OS 10, where if they instigated a major paradigm shift with the OS (a completely new UI philosophy for example), then they would reflect the level of advancement with a new number – i.e. OS XI

I did get a Kernel Panic ones when I was running Panther and I was using Disk Vault. Never used Disk Vault after that as I lost over 50% of my files.

I’m still using Tiger and it does the job fine for me on my iBook G4. I’m still sticking to the PPC too.

Seems like the Leopard has been very buggy. Almost like a step back due to all the new features. Hope they fix it soon, as I might get a new mac this year.

Ever since upgrading to Leopard, I’ve had freezing and kernel panics galore whenever I used Parallels. In Tiger, it was rock solid. In fact I had never had a crash in Tiger. Then Leopard ruined my lucky streak. I too get the intermittent beach ball for no apparent reason from time to time and Parallels gave up the ghost a couple of weeks ago and the VM just blue screens now instead of booting up. Luckily, I hardly use it. Still, WTF is up with this release? It’s just like taking a backwards step in stability even though we gain all the eye candy and goodies in the new OS. I’d take stability over some of the enhancements they put in. It’s a good thing I kept my production Mac Pro installed with Tiger. I’d shoot myself if I lost my editing bay. While I love my MacBook Pro, there’s no way I could shove my Black Magic card into the thing to edit with. I can’t wait for a point release that will finally fix these Leopard issues.

wasn’t it fun to vent a wee bit about Leopard’s suckiness. i knew it would. we’ve almost got a little mini-mostlylisa-mac-forum going on! sweet!

thanks for all the advice. i’m gonna try some of your suggestions on my MB this week and i’ll write a follow-up post to let you know if anything solves my Leopard issues. @Joey — you were def right keeping your editing computer free of the black disc. My core audio has been compromised ever since. Not a great thing for my editing bay.

though, my main problem on the Pro is a FireBox FireWire Audio Interface kernel panic that was not solved in 10.5.2.

and for those of you stable on tiger. it may be best to just hold tight till the next update settles in.

you’ll get the stability soon enough. I’m pretty sure all of the cats were a little unsteady at first. Everyone knows the initial jump to OSX was a rough one.

Here’s what I found on Apple – Support – Topic : Mac Pro FireBox FireWire Audio Interface = Kernel Panic

    http://discussions.apple.com/message…sageID=6142324

There are (now finally acknowledged) bugs in the FW Core Audio drivers in 10.5.x. Apple has indicated that there are “new” drivers that have fixed the various issues,According to a note that Apple developer support sent to a FW Audio vendor in late January, there IS a new and supposedly bug-fixed set of FWCoreAudio drivers (242-4-3). For whatever reason, they didn’t make it into 10.5.2. Apple told the vendor that the public release date was not yet determined…..

Well…Last night, I put the computer to sleep and it didn’t ‘wake up’ (Kernel panic?) I was really hoping that the FW Core audio problem went away with the Mac Pro firmware update 1.3 but it seems that it’s not resolved. The problem appears to be less systematic. Before the firmware update, I would get a kernel panic every time the computer went to sleep or when I connect or disconnectthe firewire cable from my Firewire audio recording device (Presonus firebox). Yesterday my computer had two Kernel panics while I was using Logic pro 8…

    Hi.

You got a couple of kernel panic’s… that’s nothing compared to what i got.

I have 2 MacBook’s Pro, a 15″ (mine) and a 17″ (work), on mine i was lucky and pretty much everything works, i still get the occasional spinning beach ball, but nothing to serious.

On the 17″, last friday, after the update to 10.5.2 i got 11 dead pixels and a dead superdrive. It looks like the latest Apple update changes the firmware on you’re superdrive, and now i got a superdrive that reads cd’s, spits out dvd’s (refuses to play any DVD, recorded with data or a normal original movie DVD) and refuses to write cd’s or dvd’s.

I’ve contacted Apple, and the only thing they tell me is for me to take my MacBook to a Mac Genius, problem is i live in Portugal, we don’t even have a Mac physical shop in here!!! only the online shop is available… so i ended up packing and sending my work MacBook to Apple UK… with my luck, it will probably get lost, stolen, broken or something else on the way there…

And don’t even start me on the price problem… just for you to get a idea, a MacBook Pro in the US is $1999US, the same MacBook Pro in here is $2858US…. that’s $859US more expensive…

Sorry about this… i just had to vent my current frustration with Apple…

    Best regards from Portugal,
    Joao.
